Unsure

Who: Handy and Rose
Where: Hallway/Banquet Hall
When: Evening, after Handy's chat with Jack, and after he meets Temperance Brennan; also after Rose's conversation with Jack.
Summary: Troubled by what Jack said about Rose avoiding the Doctor and about her being from "after" Handy, said Handy decides to seek her out.

Handy left the library sometime in the late afternoon to take up wandering through the hallways of the hotel. He wasn't entirely sure whether or not he was looking for Rose - he both desperately wanted to talk to her after what Jack had told him and, at the same time (though he would never admit it to himself) he was at least a little bit afraid at what her reaction might be to seeing him again (not to mention that, as obvious as it was from what Jack had said, he didn't want to confirm the fact of his own death). He couldn't remember a time as the Doctor when he'd been so shy about anything, but then he wasn't really the Doctor. Not completely. A few speech patterns hadn't been the only thing he had inherited from Donna. For all that she was so brash and loud and brave on the outside, she (and thus Handy) didn't have that old self-assurance that had gotten the Doctor through so much of his life. They were both good at pretending, though, even to themselves, so Handy told himself that he hadn't immediately sought Rose out when he discovered her presence because he'd wanted to spend some time exploring by himself, not because he was afraid that the person on whom he'd come to rely for stability in his thus far very short life would turn him away.

It was good that he'd managed to convince himself of that, or else he might have turned right back around and gone back to hide in his room when he turned a corner and spotted her.

She gave him a little knowing smile and gently took his hand in her own before stepping back and giving his arm a light tug. "C'mon," she said with a nod in the direction of the dining hall, "let's get some food. 'm kinda starved, myself." She wasn't really, she'd pretty much forgotten about food entirely that day, but it would cushion the blow of her reminder.

"Gets easier, you know," she told him quietly. "Some days you had to tell me to eat, we'd get so wrapped up in things."

Rose glanced over at him, then said, "You didn't disappear, not for me." He'd been there in the mornings when she'd left, and still there in the evenings when she'd gotten back. No disappearing to speak of, not in that way anyway.

"'s one of the odd things about this place," she explained as they went through the big ornately decorated doors into the banquet hall, the smell of buffet drifting to meet them. "People have gotten pulled in from all different points of their timelines, but no one ever went missing outside of this place. It's the Impossible Hotel."

She stopped, right there in the middle of dining hall, and turned to face him. "Could be what?" she asked with actual curiosity. "'s probably not anything I haven't thought of already, so out with it, you." And yet a tiny part of her was afraid that he'd come up with something she hadn't even begun to fathom. Even when he was part human, he was leagues above her in intelligence.

Yep, she'd thought of that one before. But if they were copies, there wasn't any difference from the real thing, because everything certainly hurt just as much as it had before.

She tilted her head, seeming to study him for a moment, then pointed at his face and said with all seriousness, "Maybe a little bit round the edges," before turning to head to the buffet. She couldn't stop the giggle once she had her back to him.

Rose rolled her eyes as she grabbed a plate. "Doctor, this is my mum you're talking bout," she reminded him. "Manners are optional, like traffic laws." She spotted some lovely chips on the buffet and started piling them onto her plate. "Besides, I learned from the best," she said with a pointed glance in his direction.

She paused, her hand frozen on the way to scooping some cooked vegetables onto her plate. Oh... right. She'd tried to forget those first days, when things had been so confusing and... Taking a deep breath, she set her plate down on the edge of the counter. "I do, yeah," she confirmed quietly, not looking at him. "I know I didn't back then, and... 'm sorry bout that. But to me..." She turned to face him suddenly. "You are my Doctor, not the other one," she told him firmly. "It was weird at first, I know, and I should have acted differently, but I didn't, and 'm so sorry I did that to you."

That grin did a lot to help ease her guilt over the way things had gone early on in their relationship. She could almost see that look in his eyes that meant he was counting out the victories over the other him; she recognized it from the times when he'd actually done so out loud.

She turned back to her plate, but glanced over when he started talking again. "What, how 's always exactly what you want, how you want it?" she questioned, then shrugged and went back to grabbing some vegetables and chicken. "Hadn't noticed. Nope." She set down the serving spoon and reached over to set a hand on his shoulder. "'s this place's version of 'normal', Doctor. Just go with it, and ask your questions after you've enjoyed devouring the food."

Rose blinked and gave him a look. "Uh, no," she said with hesitation, eying the orange stuff he'd put on his plate. "But, you know, this place probly doesn't really care bout the difference between what you want and what's good for ya." If it did, it wouldn't give people an endless supply of alcohol.

Rose's jaw fell in amused disbelief and she pointed a serving spoon at him. "Just you watch it, mister," she warned him with narrowed eyes. "I don't want to have to find a pear to throw at you."

Plopping the spoon back down into its tray, she turned and headed for a nearby table, setting her plate down before taking a seat. She couldn't remember how this him had reacted to that threat, but later him had always been pretty amused by it.

Rose could see right through that 'serious' look of his and it made her break out in a smile. "I think this is the sort of place that would probably love to see you break out in a nervous allergic reaction at the thought of a pear coming near you," she informed him. "Seems just that sort of twisted to me. So's you better be on your guard, Doctor. If you get on my bad side, I might even try to make you eat one."

Rose followed his example and munched on a chip, her grin not fading in the slightest. "But you've gotta sleep sometime," she reminded him with only a touch of evil mischief. "After all, you're gettin' old." And she used her fork to spear a piece of chicken victoriously.

"'s better that way," she decided with a sage nod. "You snore, cheat at Monopoly, and always get the polish everywhere but on my toenails. Mum had to be restrained when you dumped neon green on her favorite rug." She munched happily on a piece of cooked broccoli.
